Changes coming to our parking lot coming to our parking lot

Last school year we had a safety audit with the Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium (SCSTC). This team observed the traffic patterns and flow during arrival and dismissal times. In September the school board shared these new guidelines for safe arrival and dismissal. Specifically it stated:

Supervision starts fifteen (15) minutes before bell time and ends fifteen (15) minutes after bell time. School staff will contact the parent/guardian, followed by emergency contact for any student who is not picked up within this time.

Designated bus loading zones are out-of-bounds during arrival and dismissal times, with the only exception being Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium buses. Parents are not allowed to drop off or pick up in the bus zones.

Once buses have departed and the loading zone is opened up by school staff, traffic must be in constant flow in this area at all times, meaning no unattended parked vehicles in this area.

Unattended vehicles must be parked in an approved parking space, outside of the bus loop with the engine turned off.

What does this mean for Clearview Meadows?

We need to change our procedures to ensure student and staff safety.

The bus loop will be completely closed for ½ hour in the morning and again in the afternoon, each day. The only permitted traffic will be school board busses and vans.

The bus loop will be open for flowing traffic at other times, but parking on the south side of the bus loop will no longer be permitted during school hours.

Our bus loop is always a fire lane and access for emergency vehicles will always be a priority.

When will the change occur?

Tuesday, October 14th. Until that time, our staff will be talking to drivers and handing out reminders to anyone visiting our school, so no one is surprised by the change when it occurs.

Where can we park?

25 spots in front of our school

Both sides of Johnathon Court (south of the school)

Both sides of Locke Ave, East of the NO PARKING signs

14 spots at SCI community lot

Wyant Ave (North side of school)

The Clearview Bylaw Officer will be providing us with an updated map next week, clearly showing where the Township permits on street parking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I park in the bus loop during the day to pick up a child?

A: As of Oct 14th, all parking will occur in the community lot in front of the school.

Parking is not permitted in the bus loop during school hours.

Q: What about after hours? Can I park in the bus loop while I wait for my child who is at a team practice?

A: Before 8 a.m. and after 4 p.m. the bus loop is not monitored. The school will not be asking parents to move their cars at that time.

Q: How will I know when the bus loopis completely closed?

A: The pylons will beplaced at theentrance. In the first week or so, our bylaw officer and OPP community officers will be there to answer questions and assist.

Q: Is this just at Clearview Meadows?

A: All schools were asked to move towards closing their bus loops, if it wasn't already in place. Most schools do not permit parking in the bus lane.

Q: The parking lot doesn't seem big enough for all the staff and visitor parking. What can be done about that?

A: The staff has grown in recent years, and the staff lot is now full. SCDSB staff are aware of the parking limitations, but are pleased that we have 25 public spots in front of the school and 14 at the high school. We can share that alternatives for parking are being considered.

Q: Why wait until October to make the change?

A: The guidelines were released the second week of school and we wanted to make sure we consulted theschool staff, bus company, Clearview Township Bylaw Officer, as well as the OPP to ensure safety for all. As well, we needed to have signs fabricated, and that process will be completed the first week of October. Feedback from School Council last year clearly stated that parents would want to know why the changes are happening and have a little time to prepare for it. For all these reasons this change will occur after the Thanksgiving weekend.

Q: Where can I find more information?

A: A full description of the Supervision, Arrival and Dismissal Procedures is available on the SCDSB's Safety Procedures page.

Safety is our priority at Clearview Meadows and these changes are designed to make our parking lot and bus loop safer. Thank you for your understanding, patience and assistance with this process.

Download a PDF version of the letter that was sent home to families.
